Northstar is a frontend template for building an AI chat workspace. It runs entirely in the browser with a built-in mock API, so you can explore every screen without setting up a backend, then connect your own API when you are ready.
Please note: This is a frontend template. It does not include a real AI model, authentication server, or database. Chat replies are simulated, and all data is stored locally in your browser.
What's included
- Chat workspace with simulated streaming replies, Markdown and code-block rendering, prompt starter chips, and tool selection (Image Studio, Web Search, Canvas Studio, Skill Runner).
- Context rail showing session context, attached documents, and tool configuration.
- Workspace pages: Library, Projects, Agents, Gems, Skills, MCP, Plugins, Schedules, and Help.
- Sign-in and sign-up flow with isolated workspaces per user (demo only, not production security).
- English and Vietnamese localization using next-intl.
- Responsive layouts tested at desktop (1440 px), tablet (768 px), and mobile (390 px).
Data and backend
- By default, requests are intercepted by Mock Service Worker (MSW) and stored in IndexedDB. Nothing leaves the browser.
- An optional Node.js mock server is included for testing over HTTP.
- An OpenAPI 3.1 contract (
contracts/openapi.json) documents the endpoints, including Server-Sent Events streaming, so you can build or connect a backend that matches the frontend. - To switch to your own API, point
NEXT_PUBLIC_API_BASE_URLto your server.
Tech stack
Next.js 16 (App Router), React 19, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS 4, shadcn/ui, TanStack Query 5, and next-intl. Package manager: pnpm.

The package includes a README and guides for getting started, customization (branding, colors, fonts, copy, navigation, locales), known limitations, an asset register, and third-party notices.
